Road Trips have been a part of the American way of life since the post-war boom created an elaborate system of highways and the economic means for the average citizen to take to the road. With rising gas costs, road trips today tend to be for a purpose rather than just for the sake of being on the road. Families, couples, and friends who hit the road together need to plan carefully in order to reduce the stress that can rise when trapped for hours in a confined, moving vehicle.

Although global positioning systems (GPS) are almost standard features in cars or on cell phones and laptops, many people still prefer to have a physical, foldable road map on such a trip. It’s best to get one that covers each state being visited, such as a florida map and a Georgia map for a trip from Orlando to Atlanta. While GPS can be more exact, having a larger picture of the road traveled can be not only soothing, but can reveal the potential for interesting side trips along the way.

Once the destination is reached, it’s good to have recent quality street maps on hand. Again, this is to provide a bigger picture than a small GPS screen can provide. Also, detailed street maps of cities usually include sites of interest that may or may not be listed in a GPS system. Actually, using a combination of physical maps and GPS is probably the best way to ensure accurate directions, up-to-date information, and a broader picture of a geographical location.

To get in a few hours of cycling while visiting Vancouver, there is an enjoyable trip options from downtown to Deep Cove . Visitors will be rewarded with mountain and coastal views as well as opportunities for great food stops, a bit of walking and great weather.

For tourists staying at any of the downtown Vancouver hotels , the best time to cycle the route is to start off earlier in the morning on weekends, when car traffic is lighter at most of the major intersections in the North Vancouver area. The trek is about 28 kilometers, one-way starting from downtown, then along the Seawall bike path is Stanley Park , up near Prospect Point for some bridge span photo opportunities before biking over Lion’s Gate Bridge all the while on a bike-pedestrian lane.

After the bridge, turn right two times to ride briefly through Capilano First Nations Reserve. Stay along the bike path or road shoulders along Esplanade Road, Lower Lever Road, and Dollarton Highway. After the Phibbs TransLink bus exchange near the Trans-Canada Highway, there are just a few hills, but the road does not wind around with blind corners. It’s a fantastic way to learn cycling hills with few cars around.

Once at Deep Cove, browse around the quaint community art gallery and its gift shop. There are small restaurants, cafes, a kayak center or check out the Panorama Park located along the shore and have a picnic lunch. Visitors will find Deep Cove an idyllic oasis and will be glad they cycled instead of taking a car.

When planning a trip to Hong Kong, most people focus on the city and ignore the outlying areas. By doing so they miss out on a treasure of unique experiences that can be found in places like the New Territories. In 2001 nearly half the population of Hong Kong resided in the New Territories .

In 1898 the British grabbed more land from China and these lands, north of Kowloon, became known as the New Territories. It includes the mainland between the Sham Chun River and the Kowloon Ranges and all of the Outlying Islands , a total of 368 square miles.

Visitors who want to explore natural beauty and rural life would due well to abandon their luxury hotel in Hong Kong and head out to the New Territories. They’ll find gorgeous parks that eclipse those inside the city as well as wild countryside made for hiking, walking, and biking. Sai Kung offers a number of village restaurants and bars that will appeal to tourist quality standards while still providing a slower, more relaxed escape from the urban throng.

The New Territories are home to a few of Hong Kong’s notable attractions. The Hong Kong Heritage Musuem is located in Sha Tin. There are also several important temples, including the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas and the Man Mo Temple. Visitors may also want to check out the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree or the walled village of Kat Hing Wai.

For science lovers staying at a hotel in Sydney, there are two branches of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, both mandatory destinations: The Powerhouse Museum and the historic Sydney Observatory.

The Powerhouse Museum is a science museum dedicated to 400,000 artifacts related to technology in science, communication, costume, furniture, the decorative arts, computer technology, space technology, and even steam engines. The museum itself has been around for about 125 years, and has been at its current site, a converted electric tram power station, since 1988. The building itself, though, has been around since 1902. This familiar and popular destination even boasts its own magazine, the Powerline, which is sent free to members and available at the museum. The museum first began at the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879, and was known variously as the Technological, Industrial and Sanitary Museum of New South Wales (1879) and later as the Technological Museum (1893).

On a hill in the center of Sydney, travelers will find the Sydney Observatory , developed from a fort that was built on Windmill Hill (now known as Observatory Hill) in the early part of the 19th century. During the rest of the 19th century, an astronomical observatory was constructed here. It’s now a museum where visitors may observe planets and stars through a 29 cm refractor telescope that was built in 1874, the oldest telescope in Australia that receives regular use.

From observing stars through the oldest telescope to observing unique exhibits such as the oldest operating rotative steam engine in the world, a visit to both sites will give travelers insight into the scientific advancements of humanity on Earth and the wonder of the stars.

There is always time to muse on some of the more unusual things that people find at the bottom of the ocean. It’s perhaps more mysterious than outer space, helping to give fuel to the notion that there are indeed more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in any philosophy.

If the ocean floor is as complex and unknowable as it appears to be, then the human being lives in a very unusual place indeed. It’s impossible to know the past entirely, and this is something that most scholars and students of history have known for awhile, but it sometimes seems as though the future is much less mysterious even than what’s already been in the world of the living.

A perfect example, where off the coast of one of the most attractive tourist sites in the world, there is a half mile stretch of wall on the bottom of the sea. Close enough to the Bahamas five star hotels to be a short boat ride, one can find the Bimini Road , also called the Bimini Wall. The structure is from 6 to 13 feet high, and most people think it is the result of hard shells settling. That could very well be, and there’s no real evidence to support the idea that it’s from another ancient civilization, like Atlantis, but it’s sometimes lovely to play with the notion in the mind.

Vienna is one of Europe’s great historic cities and the amazing architecture found there represents it incredible cultural and heritage and demonstrates styles from various periods and genres in history. It is one of the nine states of Austria and is the capital of this republic. It has a strong cultural and artistic tradition and is well known for its support of the opera, theatre and classical music. The Imperial Court Theatre and other organizations are housed in a building that is as beautiful and impressive as the performances within.

There are numerous museums throughout the city and the guests in a Vienna hotel are frequently amazed at the extent of offerings and the beauty of the city. Some of the more uniquely themed museums include the Burial Museum and the Vienna Clock Museum . These are also some of the city’s popular tourist attractions.

The Castle Belvedere is another great museum and it is also one of the city’s great landmarks. It was built under the Prinz Eugen and contains some priceless pieces of art. There are paintings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Scheile as well as other great artists and sculptors of the early twentieth century. In addition it has many changing exhibits and will host touring works.

Travelers with an interest in military history cannot overlook Corregidor, a small rock of an island in the Philippines, which may be found at the entrance of Manila Bay, less than 30 miles from Manila hotels . The island is the largest of five islands (La Monja, Caballo, El Fraille, and Carabao), between the shores of Bataan and Cavite. It’s only about four miles long with an area of a little over 1,700 acres, and contains an island fortress that stands today as a memorial for those Filipino and American fighters who held their ground in World War II against invading Japanese soldiers.

During the war, the Japanese invaded the Phillipnes in 1941, and Corregidor became not only the headquarters of the Allied Forces, but also the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth government. When Bataan fell in 1942, Philippine and American forces held onto Corregidor for another 27 days, but the Japanese forces were overwhelming. Nearly three years later, though, General MacArthur and the Allied forces returned and recaptured Corregidor.

Also known as Fort Mills, Corregidor is referred to as “the Rock,” and geologists think it was once a part of an immense volcano that erupted on one side, gradually eroding, leaving the tadpole-shaped mound that’s visible today. Touring the fort, visitors will witness the large guns of Corregidor and ruined buildings and tunnels, all remnants and reminders of the last world war.

While there are some common associations to the city of Las Vegas, such as casinos, great shows and quick marriages, there is actually a great deal more to the city than what these genres represent or what most people who visit it realize. There are numerous museums in the city and some of them are entertainment oriented like the Liberace Foundation and Museum and the Elvis A Rama Museum. Others are based on art genres or culture and science in orientation such as the Las Vegas Natural History Museum . They are all popular with tourists and offer a variety of interesting exhibits and displays.

Most of the Las Vegas hotels will have staff that is experienced in recommending attractions that are particular to personal preferences and interests. They get a general idea of a person’s interests and suddenly the city opens up in possibilities. In addition to great museums there are numerous live music venues. Concerts and smaller club performances are extremely popular in the city and it is possible to see some top professionals, such as Elton John and Bon Jovi , among many others, and also some of the local musicians who are just beginning their careers, though they might become next year’s top performer. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities and great dining experiences, that go beyond the fabulous buffets, are possible in this desert city.

It’s tough to be in the theatre business these days, and it’s even tougher to remain a theatre city, but Seattle continues to uphold the tradition. It’s been a rough season lately, for many years, actually, and it doesn’t look like it will get easier. Small companies are going by the wayside all the time, but places like The Intiman continue to roll.

They do it with great style, too, and enough to suggest that it’s not going to go away anytime soon. In fact, there are signs that this rough patch is over, or perhaps that the older theaters have learned to adjust. The offerings here have always been for small audiences, where the name is the Swedish for “intimate.” From the beginning, its mission to speak powerful truths in a language that only this art form can muster, has been an artistic rudder.

It’s served the city, along with the theatre community at large, as the recent production of ” Ruined ” is showing. The story of Congolese women could only be told in a small space, where the power of the tale can touch every audience member.

It is work like this that draws visitors to book a Seattle hotel and see what’s happening. There are smaller spaces, surely, and also larger theaters, and all of this adds up to an art form that’s very much alive.
